something and nothing (2020)

For 24 hours I screenshotted whatever screen I was using whenever I loaded a new page. This was during the first national lockdown, so the internet was the only way to connect to people outside of my home. The pandemic turned a lot of events that would have been full of people into online live streams. This simultaneously limited the experience and expanded the availability of the events. A concert for an American pop star that would usually only be available to the people in the city they were performing for, became a live stream that millions could access from across the world. I felt both isolated and massively connected by the incomprehensible number of people that I was sharing an experience with, but could not see, feel, or touch.

In an effort to communicate this, the screenshots were cropped down to only 16x9 pixels. This leaves images that are essentially of nothing, even though they are derived from something that is massively full of information. Despite the absence of content in these photos, they are still intriguing and invite an active effort to look and find something to see.
