see you in the dark (2020)

Last year I created a video montage titled see you in the dark, where I collected scenes from romantic films as a way of considering how love is visually presented through gesture in film. The scenes come from the crux of the films, where the audience is being given the final convincing push that yes, these people are in love. The mise en scene is cropped down to zoom in on gestures that reveal often aggressive and possessive pushing and pulling of bodies. Hands grab and hold on, women are pulled in and groped as signals of desire. Scenes of clubs and dancing are intermingled, meant to signal the real-world locations these cinematic representations play out in.
